The Sudanese Materials Scientists & Engineers (SMSE) is an initiative dedicated to advancing scientific research capacity among Sudanese graduate students and early-career researchers in materials science and engineering.
Empowering The next Generation of Materials Innovators in Sudan

Our Work
We offer 3- to 6-month remote research placements that connect Sudanese students with leading scientists and academics globally. Our projects are grounded in real-world engineering challenges and are designed to provide meaningful hands-on experience, personalized mentorship, and training in advanced scientific research techniques.
Why SMSE?
Despite their talent, many emerging Sudanese scientists face significant challenges, including:
-
Limited access to high-quality research opportunities
-
Scarce advanced resources and laboratory infrastructure
-
Few opportunities for international collaboration and training
Our Vision
We believe in the power of science, technology, and innovation to drive sustainable development and societal transformation. SMSE contributes directly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to Quality Education (SDG 4) Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9) Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17)

SMSE addresses these barriers by:
-
Providing structured remote research projects with clear deliverables
-
Offering access to specialized software tools and online training modules
-
Connecting students with experienced researchers worldwide
-
Supporting participants in building competitive postgraduate applications
